Maritime Institutes

For a long period, there was only one Marine Academy in Bangladesh which was established in 1962 during the time when Bangladesh was a part of Pakistan. Now called the Bangladesh Marine Academy, it had a great role in producing thousands of Masters (Captains) and Engineers for the shipping industry. Many leaders of the industry are the graduates of the same Academy on the banks of Karnafully River, Chittagong.

However, the government felt that there was room for many private academies and allowed formation of the private Marine Academies. In 2012, Prime Minister Hasina declared that Bangladesh government will open 6 more Academies to provide the international ship owners with officers and engineers culminating in huge earnings of foreign currency. However, due to the declining shipping market, there is a huge overcapacity of graduates from both Bangladesh Marine Academy and the private academies. In 2015, an estimated 1000 cadets from both the private and government academy will be sitting idle without any employment or related training to earn the sea license that is a requirement to become a ship’s officer.
