Role of Maritime Administration

The only maritime administration that is under the Ministry of Shipping and is a regulatory body is The Department of Shipping (DOS). The main functions are as follows.

•  Advising the government about promotion of maritime activities

• Creation of policies that are in sync with the international conventions and their implementation

• Promotion of maritime safety at sea and inland waters

• Protection of marine environment

• Monitoring and raising the training standards for government and private maritime institutions.

• Carrying out of examinations and issue of certificates of competency

• Protecting the rights of the seafarer

• Ship surveys and casualty investigations

• Contacting ship owners and various agencies as to determine the demand of the seafarer

• Negotiation of terms of employment for the seafarer

• Control of the government shipping office in Chittagong.
