Zakaria Khan Majlis Pioneer Batch (1953); Engineering; no more…….

July 14, 2022

Engineer Zahedur Rahman (Pioneer batch)  sent the following email:

“Our good old friend, Khan Majlis 3rd batch (E-Plymouth) a longtime colleague in Lloyd’s is no more. He passed away in a Dhaka hospital (Ever Care formerly Apollo) around 7 pm today. Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji’un. May Allah bless him with peace in heaven.” He was 84, and  leaves behind his wife and a son.

Engineer Surveyor Khan Majlis was one of the five PSC (Public Service Commission) 3rd Batch (1954) cadets. He joined IWTA and was in charge of Barisal Workshop. Later he joined Lloyds Register and served as Country Manager in Bangladesh and Senior Surveyor in Iran.

He was recruited as a marine engineering apprentice under the then Colombo Plan of the government of Pakistan in the year 1954 and received his initial training at The  Plymouth Naval Dockyard, U.K.  He started his sea career in “Pan Islamic Shipping ” and “Pakistan Steam Navigation Co.”, raising to the rank of Chief Engineer (Combined Motor and Steam). Subsequently he left the sea career and initially joined ashore as Superintendent of  PIWTA (which later became BIWTA).

In the year 1972, he joined the Lloyd’s Register  of Shipping Classification Society as ” Engineer Surveyor”, and subsequently promoted to the rank of “Senior Ship and Engineer Surveyor and Country Operations Manager for Bangladesh”, in which capacity he retired in the year 2000.

An U.K. Certified  Chartered Engineer, Mr. Khan Majlis was the first exclusive Class Surveyor of Bangladeshi origin to have joined  in any Class Society.

He actively took lead and patronised a number of training and development activities of young professionals, including  continuation of Lloyd’s Register (LR) scholarships to the young aspiring cadets of  Bangladesh Mercantile Marine Academy. He participated in several social, professional and Learned Society activities in leading roles. It included the Rotary Club, the Merchant Navy Officers Benevolent Fund and the Chairmanship of The Bangladesh branch of the Institute of Marine Engineers, U.K.,  to name a few.

Mr. Khan Majlis was gifted with  an extraordinary  pleasant personality,  being exemplary in simplicity, kindness and gentle in nature, and always having a helping  attitude with a broad smile. He was  a truly “happy man”, till his last breath.

Let’s pray for the departed soul. May Allah give him a space in the Jannat ul Ferdaus.
