Sep 23, 2021

Dear members of the Bangladeshi maritime fraternity,

Assalaamu Alaikum and Good Day!

It gives me immense pleasure to inform you that I have been granted the coveted and prestigious status of being a Chartered Master Mariner by the Court of the Honourable Company of Master Mariners, London, in July 2021.

According to the award body, this award is given to suitably qualified and experienced mariners who represent the Gold standard of professionalism and achievement within the maritime industry. It is a mark of excellence that evidences personal eminence and expertise, superior competence and peer-recognised qualities. Chartership is ultimate industry recognition granted only to individuals who can demonstrate superior capability and who, by their own efforts, have contributed to, and measurably benefitted, the maritime industry.

I had to fulfil the requirements of a rigorous application procedure and a high-level interview, thereafter achieving this honourable citation.

In addition to achieving the high professional standard, my following contribution to maritime community and to the wider maritime industry have been considered:

1 The President of Bangladesh Merchant Marine Officers’ Association (2015-2019),

2 President of Marine Surveyor Association of Bangladesh (2019 and ongoing),

3 The Honorary Secretary and Chairman of Nautical Institute Bangladesh Branch (2004-2011),

4 Council Member (2009-2015) and Member of Executive Board (2016-2022) of Nautical Institute UK,

5 Regional Director of International Institute of Marine Surveying, UK;

6 Expert delegate in IMO for Nautical Institute (2013-2015)

7 Expert Delegate in IMO for International Transport Workers Federation (ITF) 2017 & ongoing.

8 Member of the Maritime Safety Committee of the ITF (2018 & ongoing).

9 In maritime training and education of Bangladesh introduced UK MCA and SQA approved courses.

At present there are 69 Chartered Master Mariners (CMMar) globally, 10 in the Afro-Asian countries and one in Bangladesh.

The supporting organisations for this award are: The Nautical Institute, UK Maritime and Coast Guard Agency, Trinity House Corporation of London, Institute of Marine Engineering, Science and Technology (IMarEST), UK Chamber of Shipping, Merchant Navy Training Board, Royal Navy, Royal Fleet Auxiliary, International Federation of Ship Masters Association, International Chamber of Shipping, Maritime Educational Foundation, Royal Institute of Navigation.

I take this opportunity to thank my senior peers and mentors, as well as to fellow mariners for contributing towards my career development and in contributing the maritime community.

My special gratitude to my mentor and professional guide Capt. F R Chowdhury (1 N). My special thanks to MarEngr. Sheikh Shahabuddin (2 E) and Mr. Ghulam Suhrawardi (6 N) for encouraging me in professional development and service to the maritime community. My batchmates Ghulam Hussain (11 N) and Qamruzzaman (11 E) have been my inspiration and companion in contributing to the maritime industry. It has been great to sit three batchmates concurrently in the sessions of IMO.

I am indebted to Capt. Belal Ahmed (14 N) for his sincere advice and assistance in getting BMMOA affiliated to ITF in 2015  and surely BMMOA is getting the benefit of it now.

I am immensely thankful to MarEngr. M A Baten (18 E) and all the overseas maritime community members and leaders in raising the fund to get the four seafarers released from the Nigerian prison in 2016.  The multi-meritorious Zillur (25 E) has been of great assistance in this matter. He is the volunteer focal point of mariners’ activities in the UK starting from fund rising to cultural show and contributing enormously to the global BD mariners.

I earnestly request the young generation of mariners to work hard, respect their maritime career and give their sincere efforts to raise their own as well as national standards in the global context with a mindset to contribute to the maritime community and the wider maritime industry.

I was invited to receive the award by attending the Award Event in London at the HQS Wellington on 14 SEP 2021 but could not make it due to COVID travelling restrictions. However, attended the event online and a clip of citation of my award was recorded.

Kind regards

Zillur Rahman Bhuiyan (11 N)
