Academy Inauguration Day – 3 Sept 2019 – Commandant’s Message

Excerpts from Commandant Sajid Hussain’s facebook entry

3rd September 1962 morning 10 AM. A brief inauguration session took place at this remote village Juldia. Recitation from the Holy Quran. Commodore Mohammed Asif Alavi PN, in presence of the new Cadets, Officers, Instructors and Staff, declared “Mercantile Marine Academy – open” in the name of Allah, the merciful. Academy started functioning with 44 Cadets (21 Nautical & 21 Engineering).

However, during our Great Liberation War in 1971, the then Pakistan Government shifted the Academy to Karachi leaving this campus abandoned. In 1972, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman resumed it as “Marine Academy, Bangladesh” with appointing Merchant Marine Capt. M L Rahman as the first Bengalee Commandant. He also took a project titled “Development of Marine Academy (1973-1980)” and could raise the Academy at the forefront of maritime professional excellence in South Asia.

Setting new sail in 1972 by the Father of Maritime Bangladesh and thereafter the inspirational visit by Hon’ble Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in 2011, our beloved Academy is now marching ahead through a Decade of Development (2009-2019) achieving coveted international standing earning name and fame of developing world-class maritime leaders!

Upon cancelation of the former 14 Branches of the World Maritime University, Sweden, now only 3 former branches including our Academy are successful, through assessment, in upgrading the status to WMU Partner Institution (signed MOU on 20 May 2019). Recognition of UK Merchant Navy Training Board, IMarEST London & NI London and of UK MCA is in progress.

We have successfully enriched our Academy from ‘Traditional to Digital’ by incorporating e-Learning. We have also provided consultancy to IMO, WMU & ILO and have formulated our plans for contributing in the blue-economy based development including UN SDG Goals 1, 4, 5, 8 & 17.

We have, so far, produced nearly 4,600 smart, skilled and disciplined Cadets for national and international fleet. Our bright alumni & alumnae’s collective contribution to the economy of Bangladesh is over US$ 225 Million per year. Besides, our ex-Cadets are keeping remarkable roles at leading national/international institutions in UK, USA, Canada, Singapore, Australia and Middle East.

We have initiated and provided technical assistance in establishing Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Maritime University, 4 new Marine Academies, upgraded our Bachelor of Maritime Science pass degree course into honours course and developed ‘MSc in Maritime Science’ course jointly with Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Maritime University; commenced from Oct 2018.

100 acres land at this Juldia-Rangadia valleys proved to be a fertile birth-place where national & international male & female maritime leaders are being born. May Allah bless us in our maritime educational voyages!
