Batteries to power Havila newbuilds

Havila Kustruten, Havyard

Havila Kystruten has selected Norwegian Electric Systems (NES) and Norwegian Control Systems (NCS) to supply its four newbuild vessels with hybrid electric propulsion and control systems.

The delivery includes an energy storage system, which contains batteries with a capacity per vessel of 6,100kWh, more than double that of the biggest battery-operated ferries. The delivery also contains a charging system for onshore recharging of the battery packs.

Sales support manager Henry Myhre and President and CEO of Norwegian Electric Systems Tor Leif Mongstad commented: “With this order, we will demonstrate that we have the right technology to meet future requirements for lower emissions and greener shipping.”

NES will deliver the generators, complete switchboard systems, trafos, frequency converters for the thruster engines and the energy management system. NCS will deliver products for the order, including an integrated automation system, integrated bridge solution and tank gauging system.

The passenger vessels, which will operate on the Norwegian coast, are due for delivery beginning summer 2019 and are expected in service from 2021.
