The Shoreside Tankerman represents the company as the first line supervisor, and is in charge of operations for Sause Bros. owned or operated barges while moored at docks or terminals for loading and discharging of cargo. The Barge Master San Francisco Bay Area works in close cooperation with local ILWU crews, terminal personnel, regulatory agency personnel, and customer representatives to complete loading and discharging of cargo in a safe and efficient manner within local, state and federal regulations and company operational guidelines.


Requirements

  1. Efficiently transfer cargo between Sause Bros. owned vessels to shoreside facilities with personnel safety, safety of equipment, and protection of cargo and environment as highest priority.
  2. To become a qualified PIC on Sause Bros.’ vessels a Barge Master must complete three loadings and three discharges each approved by the supervisor PIC aboard at the time of the transfer. Documentation will be kept shoreside in the employee’s personnel file.
  3. Implement, enforce and follow all company Safety Management System (SMS) policies, procedures and guidelines as outlined in the Safety Management System Guide.
  4. Coordinate pre-operational safety meetings with all appropriate personnel to cover operational, emergency, Safety and environmental conditions prior to commencing operations.
  5. Follow operating procedures as outlined in the Barge Operations section of the SMS.
  6. Investigate and complete all forms relating to incidents, accidents, SQE’s, near misses, property and environmental damage as they occur.
  7. Contact and notify company management as soon as possible by notifying the on duty dispatcher when serious accidents, property damage, or environmental damage occurs.
  8. Maintain current certifications of all required endorsements for licensing (HAZWOPER, First Aid/CPR, Driver License, Merchant Mariner Credential with Tankerman endorsement, TWIC card).
  9. Generate recommendations to Manager Stevedoring & Tankering for revisions in the Safety Management System (SMS) annually.
  10. Follow the guidelines and procedures for liquid cargo spills outlined by the company Contingency Plan in the event of such an emergency.
  11. Process all barge documentation and paperwork within 24 hours of completed operation.
  12. Maintain company issued vehicle in good clean condition and working order.
  13. Maintain a briefcase containing essential documents, forms, and supplies.
  14. Follow the company guidelines in completing expense account reports for monthly processing.
  15. Learn to completely operate all barge machinery and electronic systems to include skilled use of barge computers.

Previous barge operations experience with current Tankermen’s (PIC Barge) endorsement is preferred. Have the ability to complete the on-the-job training program to bring potential supervisors to a full operating standard. Potential applicants will possess a strong work ethic, including mechanical, logistical, and communication skills, with the ability to independently solve problems and work long hours on the road with minimum direction.
