SM Nazmul Huq, chief engineer and surveyor of the Department of Shipping, arrested on Thursday with Tk 5 lakh bribe, was sent to jail by the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (CMM) Court, Dhaka, on Friday. He is an alumni of the Bangladesh Marine Academy’s 26th batch.
Metropolitan Magistrate Shubrata Ghosh Shubo passed the order, rejecting his bail prayer.
Assistant Director of the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC), Md Abdul Wadud produced the engineer before the court with a prayer to send him to jail. The IO said he will later seek remand for the accused.
Advocate Rafiqul Islam moved the bail prayer for Nazmul while ACC prosecutor Abul Hasan strongly opposed it.
According to the ACC, Nazmul allegedly demanded Tk 15 lakh in bribe after one Imam Hasan of Syed Shipping Lines approached him for approval of the design.
Being informed by Imam, a team of the anti-corruption watchdog, laid ambush at a restaurant in Segunbagicha where Imam, as planned, met Nazmul and gave him Tk 5 lakh as “first instalment”. Instantly, the ACC team caught Nazmul red-handed.
On July 19, 2017, the ACC caught the then Shipping chief engineer AKM Fakhrul Islam red-handed while he was taking Tk 5 lakh as bribe from Badrul Alam, an employee of Bengal Marine Engineer Services.
