Are you ready for tanker damage stability control compliance?

Is the tanker fleet ready to meet the damage stability control requirements applicable in January 2021?

In 2014, IMO adopted guidelines for demonstrating compliance with the requirements for stability control on tankers, chemical carriers and gas carriers. Waivers are available, but the reality seems to be that vessels need to have loading computers capable of verifying compliance with intact and damage stability requirements. Under IMO’s rules, oil tankers, chemical carriers and product tankers should carry stability instruments and have the appropriate software.

The stability instrument must be approved by a classification society or the flag administration and comply with the performance standards recommended by IMO. The loading instrument should have a document of approval that clearly reflects this capability.

The guidelines apply to newbuildings built after 1 January 2016.

Vessels built before January 2016 must conform by the first renewal survey after 2016, and no later than 1 January 2021.

As we know only too well, time flies by, and January 2021 will be here in no time. Is compliance widespread or are operators facing issues? Tanker Shipping & Trade would like to know.
