Captain Fazlur Rahman (1N) explains his views on Alumni Association

For last few days a number of Juldians have been referring to a very old e-mail that I had written perhaps a few years back. Time has changed. Things have changed. I have, thereafter, written more e-mails on the same subject but nobody refers to them. I am just one of the Juldians. There are many more. Each will have his/ her own opinion. It is for Juldians to think and decide.

So far my personal views are –

  1. Our Academy was Pakistan Marine Academy and is now Bangladesh Marine Academy. In Bangladesh there are many more Academies now. The Academy was also known as Juldia Marine Academy. That name has never changed. That name causes no confusion. That gives us also a chance to be identified and known as Juldians. The ex-cadets association should be better known as Juldia Marine Academy Alumni Association and in short JMAAA. We are Juldians.

  1. I believe JMAAA was the first such institute and it still continues.

  1. JMAAA has already been involved in many good/ charitable activities – giving scholarships, books to Academy, setting up and maintaining a museum and having website with bulletins of maritime news and activities.

  1. JMAAA also holds seminars and group meetings to discuss various matters and takes up with Government various important issues.

  1. For the sake of unity there should only be one such organization and the unified name must include the word “Juldia”. Its headquarters should be in Bangladesh with regional or chapter branches/ offices in Singapore, Dubai, Hong Kong, Australia, UK, USA and Canada.

  1. I would like to clarify one or two points here. This will be an association of ex-marine academy cadets whether serving merchant navy or not. Our Bangladesh Merchant Navy Officers’ Association (BMNOA) is the one for those in the merchant navy – whether direct entry or ex-navy or ex-fisheries matters nothing. All united. Our marine communities geographically located at various places include all of them in respective locations. The NI and IMarEST remain professional institutes.

Regards.

Fazlur (1-N)
